The Swedish firm SKF trademarked the brand name Volvo in 1911 for a new series of ball bearings. In 1924, Assar Gabrielsson, an SKF sales manager, and Gustav Larson, an engineer, decided to start construction of a Swedish car. AB Volvo began activities on 10 August 1926. The first car, a Volvo ÖV 4, was built in 1927. The company underwent many administrative changes through the years.

AB Volvo sold its automobile division Volvo Cars in 1999 to Ford Motor Company. Ford owned Volvo Cars from 1999–2010 and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has owned it since 2010.
